Summary

*The Instant New York Time s Bestseller*

"A book historians will relish。"--Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal

Must read。 I've read every book about the Trump presidency。 This is the best。--Bill Press

An account like no other, from the White House reporter who has known President Donald Trump for more than 25 years。

We have never seen a president like this。。。norm-breaking, rule-busting, dangerously reckless to some and an overdue force for change to others。 One thing is clear: We are witnessing the reshaping of the presidency。

Jonathan Karl brings us into the White House in a powerful book unlike any other on the Trump administration。 He's known and covered Donald Trump longer than any other White House reporter。 With extraordinary access to Trump during the campaign and at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Karl delivers essential new reporting and surprising insights。

These are the behind-the-scenes moments that define Trump's presidency--an extraordinary look at the president, the person, and those closest to him。 This is the real story of Trump's unlikely rise; of the struggles and battles of those who work in the administration and those who report on it; of the plots and schemes of a senior staff enduring stunning and unprecedented unpredictability。

Karl takes us from a TV set turned campaign office to the strange quiet of Trump's White House on Inauguration Day to a high-powered reelection campaign set to change the country's course。 He shows us an administration rewriting the role of the president on the fly and a press corps that has never been more vital。 Above all, this book is only possible because of the surprisingly open relationship Donald Trump has had with Jonathan Karl, a reporter he has praised, fought, and branded an enemy of the people。

Yes, the Trump White House Was Even Worse than You ThoughtThis account by Jonathan Karl, the NBC White House chief correspondent, is a breezy, quick read, offset by the jarring account of what it was like to be in close proximity to the 45th president。At one level, the personality and performance of Donald Trump has been on display for all to see, and there is nothing much new or surprising in Karl’s account。 This is a man who constantly lies。 Is this because of: 1) His complete ignorance of, an Yes, the Trump White House Was Even Worse than You ThoughtThis account by Jonathan Karl, the NBC White House chief correspondent, is a breezy, quick read, offset by the jarring account of what it was like to be in close proximity to the 45th president。At one level, the personality and performance of Donald Trump has been on display for all to see, and there is nothing much new or surprising in Karl’s account。 This is a man who constantly lies。 Is this because of: 1) His complete ignorance of, and indifference to, facts, 2) His choice of unsubstantiated claims and rumors from Fox News and similar dubious outlets to the exclusion of credible expertise available to the President, or 3) His willful invention of lies, often seemingly created at the spur of the moment, to feed his own narcissism and rile his base。 Karl makes the case that all three are at play。Karl does offer some new perspectives as a first-hand observer within Trump’s White House beginning on Inauguration Day as he wandered through the West Wing after the Obama staff had left and as the Trump staff was just settling in。 From the beginning, Trump’s administration was an administration (small “a”) in chaos。 At first, this wasn’t unusual because most presidents bring along their own people for whom the demands are new and unique, and it takes time to learn how to help the new president operate the levers of power。 What set Trump’s White House apart, however, was the chop and change and unpredictability of the man himself。 The only constant was ego and self-aggrandizement。 Aides thought they had approval of marching orders, only to be undercut。 Angry presidential outbursts were commonplace。 This was a miserable work environment。Karl chronicles the futile attempts by “grown ups in the room” to bring order out of chaos。 Again, these efforts have been well recorded by John Kelly, Mick Mulvaney, and Reince Priebus among others。 The White House was a revolving door for those appointed to key positions。 More concerning, experienced Washington hands were at first slowly and then at an accelerating rate replaced by those whose only qualifications were willingness to do anything, no matter how outrageous or misconceived, to please Trump。 Those closest to Trump compete to see who can best play sycophant, tell the boss what he wants to hear, and attempt to carry out the craziest and most unreasonable orders from the Oval Office。In his role as NBC White House correspondent, Karl was on hand as an observer, grinding it out day in and day out, through the four years of the Trump presidency。 He was in attendance at events both significant, such as Trump’s meetings with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, as well as the bizarre, such as Kanye West’s visit to the Oval Office。 He is constantly amazed at how Trump chooses to spend his time frivolously when so many consequential matters must be awaiting presidential attention。The book was written before the January 6 storming of the Capitol。 But in Karl’s description the Trump Administration was unravelling more and more in the final year of office。 The remarkable thing, which Karl cannot explain, is how such an incompetent and mendacious man is so worshiped by so many supporters。 We can only be grateful that the Trump presidency has, so far, been confined to four years。 。。。more

A fast read。 Interesting how hard he tried to be “balanced,“ give Trump credit and criticize other journalists and networks。 He had some interesting never before printed anecdotes。 Nothing world changing but interesting。 A was a decent general early Trump presidency history。

Great insider view of Trump’s lunacy。 Unbelievable first hand recollections of the worst President ever and his unbelievable antics。 Writing that moves you through incidents that were reported on World news from another witness。

I decided to read this book before too long, or I won't care about the subject matter anymore。 Honestly, I never cared for the subject matter at all, but I wanted to read this journalist's book as I listen to the Powerhouse Politics podcast, and I like it a lot。 I knew all of the scandals in the book, but the extra detail made it even more real。 I felt like I was there *shudders*。 If reading about the dumpster fire that was in the White House is your thing, this is the book for you。 I decided to read this book before too long, or I won't care about the subject matter anymore。 Honestly, I never cared for the subject matter at all, but I wanted to read this journalist's book as I listen to the Powerhouse Politics podcast, and I like it a lot。 I knew all of the scandals in the book, but the extra detail made it even more real。 I felt like I was there *shudders*。 If reading about the dumpster fire that was in the White House is your thing, this is the book for you。 。。。more

Jonathan Karl is truly a gifted writer! This is the first book I’ve ever read about politics in my 65 years on this earth。 It was fast paced, educational, enlightening, and quite entertaining。 I highly recommend this to anyone who moves within the political arena or for someone, like myself, seeking a great read outside their usual genre。

This is a man who will do anything to help Republicans with keeping up with the Big Lie。No push back to Republicans, No follow up questions, Jon Karl and the White House Press Corps are wholly responsible for what happened in America because RATINGS。 And then he has the unmitigated gall to write this book, and profit even MORE from his irresponsible behavior。

Dan

Meh。 Some of it was slamming Trump

I liked this book much more than I thought and found the press perspective to be very interesting。

If you like Jonathan Karl from ABC Nightly News, you will like this book。 I really enjoyed it。

I loved this book! Jonathan Karl did a great job walking through the Trump presidency and I wish he would have waited until the election ended。 Interesting to see the perspective of someone in the media。

This audiobook is exceptional。 It is read by the author, and includes audio from key players。 Trump and other prominent officials are extensively quoted, as you would expect from this outstanding reporter。 I believe this was written pre-pandemic。 I read this following the Capital insurrection, and it was kind of surreal how are the dangers of Trump were foreshadowed in this book。 The book is not about policy, it’s about Trump’s relationship with the media, including the many, many blatant lies。 This audiobook is exceptional。 It is read by the author, and includes audio from key players。 Trump and other prominent officials are extensively quoted, as you would expect from this outstanding reporter。 I believe this was written pre-pandemic。 I read this following the Capital insurrection, and it was kind of surreal how are the dangers of Trump were foreshadowed in this book。 The book is not about policy, it’s about Trump’s relationship with the media, including the many, many blatant lies。 Karl really drives home the point that a free press is essential to democracy。 It’s a quick read/listen。 Highly recommend。 Can’t wait for his next book。 。。。more

Sad this book came to and end。 I’m a big fan of journalism and a big fan of Jonathan Karl。 I always admired Jon’s straight shooting reporting on Nightly News - and continue to do so。 This book for me was a no brained to read and very well written。 I believe in factual sources and factual portrayal through journalism and the media。 Jonathan does as well and crafts if beautifully in this book。

Interesting peek behind the curtain。 What a challenging time to be a journalist!

Jonathan Karl, a long-time Chief White House correspondent for ABC News who has covered Donald Trump since his early days as a development tycoon in 1990 after learning the trade from his father, Fred Trump。 Revealing never-before heard stories, conversations and behind-the-scenes looks at the 45th President of the United States。

My dad put it best: This is an excellent book for learning about how the political sausage is made。Focusing on President Trump's behavior and influence on his staff and the way his supporters view reporters, Jonathan Karl shines a much-needed light right at the source。 Karl cuts through the smoke and mirrors of policy debate and legalese with illuminating first-hand accounts of Trump's unprofessional, erratic and intentionally deceptive methods。 Refreshingly enlightening。 My dad put it best: This is an excellent book for learning about how the political sausage is made。Focusing on President Trump's behavior and influence on his staff and the way his supporters view reporters, Jonathan Karl shines a much-needed light right at the source。 Karl cuts through the smoke and mirrors of policy debate and legalese with illuminating first-hand accounts of Trump's unprofessional, erratic and intentionally deceptive methods。 Refreshingly enlightening。 。。。more

Yet another expose on Trump, which doesn’t quite stack up against the many more serious tomes about the 45th president。 Jonathan Karl, an ABC news reporter, certainly does have a ringside seat to the administration and is therefore able to provide a generally interesting insiders view, but the book only focuses on the first two years of the Trump Presidency。 Subsequently the book highlights that timing is everything。 Certainly Karl provides some insightful and interesting anecdotes but many have Yet another expose on Trump, which doesn’t quite stack up against the many more serious tomes about the 45th president。 Jonathan Karl, an ABC news reporter, certainly does have a ringside seat to the administration and is therefore able to provide a generally interesting insiders view, but the book only focuses on the first two years of the Trump Presidency。 Subsequently the book highlights that timing is everything。 Certainly Karl provides some insightful and interesting anecdotes but many have been thoroughly covered previously and the entire book seems quite dated。 Having now witnessed the final two years of the Trump administration, and especially the final two months, much of Karl’s content seems amusingly quaint by contrast。 Very readable and a useful historical document, but the book unfortunately lacks poorly-needed context by not extending to the tumultuous end of the administration and the downfall of Trump。 。。。more

Excellent readI am a huge fan of the Press and have been so dismayed at the actions of the politicians to portray reporters as enemies of the people and this was brought home to me the day President George H W Bush held his announcement That Dan Quayle would be his running mate for Vice President。 At one point Bush made a slightly derogatory comment about the Press that was assembled on a flatbed behind the assembled excited crowd in a town of less than 17,000 citizens。 Members of the crowd turn Excellent readI am a huge fan of the Press and have been so dismayed at the actions of the politicians to portray reporters as enemies of the people and this was brought home to me the day President George H W Bush held his announcement That Dan Quayle would be his running mate for Vice President。 At one point Bush made a slightly derogatory comment about the Press that was assembled on a flatbed behind the assembled excited crowd in a town of less than 17,000 citizens。 Members of the crowd turned and booed the Press。 I remember being shocked at this and embarrassed that this might possibly be telecast on the national news and the citizens would be portrayed as ignorant hicks。 It has only grown to much greater derision and and it takes a person of integrity to stand up and speak the truth and try to report without bias。 I think Mr。 Karl has done an admirable job at being this type of reporter even as he is vilified by the President of the United States along with his colleagues。 。。。more

I found this book very fair to the President and his Cabinet。 I found that this book pointed out flaws with everyone involved even his fellow reporters and even with himself。 It was interesting to get a peek behind the curtain to see how the press corps works。

This is another book that I picked up largely because Trump didn't want anyone to read it。 I do like Jonathan Karl and think that he is a good journalist, and I knew that there wasn't going to be anything in this book that was too crazy。 The book was very much in Karl's typical reporting style。 It was a straightforward narrative mixed with some humor。 There was nothing sensationalized, overly personalized, nor the mock outrage that has been the hallmark of so many other writings。 It was all crin This is another book that I picked up largely because Trump didn't want anyone to read it。 I do like Jonathan Karl and think that he is a good journalist, and I knew that there wasn't going to be anything in this book that was too crazy。 The book was very much in Karl's typical reporting style。 It was a straightforward narrative mixed with some humor。 There was nothing sensationalized, overly personalized, nor the mock outrage that has been the hallmark of so many other writings。 It was all cringy for me and the craziness that has been the Trump's administration for the past four years never ceases to amaze me。 I didn't find it to be particularly partisan and I think Karl did a good job of reporting what he witness without begin overtly bias。 If you're into political science, this one book could be for you。 。。。more

I accidentally hit the Kindle Edition, but read hardcover。 This book dives into the ways in which Trump has attacked but also needs the media, and how he often goes on the attack against reporters including Karl。 Karl has been covering Trump for more than 25 years。

I have followed reporter Jonathan Karl over the years and have come to like his style and the way that he explains the investigative techniques he has developed over the years in his rise to become a well-liked and credible source of news。 His book, "Front Row at the Trump Show", is often shocking in peeling back the layers of his relationship with the subject, Donald J。 Trump, and still as credible as I have come to expect from Karl。 After reading another book about the same subject, I thought I have followed reporter Jonathan Karl over the years and have come to like his style and the way that he explains the investigative techniques he has developed over the years in his rise to become a well-liked and credible source of news。 His book, "Front Row at the Trump Show", is often shocking in peeling back the layers of his relationship with the subject, Donald J。 Trump, and still as credible as I have come to expect from Karl。 After reading another book about the same subject, I thought that I knew all that I needed to。 Nope!
